According to the American Academy of Dermatology, an estimated 10 to 50 million people in this country have an allergic reaction to poison ivy each year. Poison ivy treatment includes natural remedies like jewelweed (sometimes misspelled as “jewel weed”) as well as mainstream medical remedies. Serious symptoms can include swelling of the face, mouth, neck, eyelids and genitals and very large blisters with a great deal of liquid, widespread across the body. Other characteristic signs and symptoms of poison ivy are that the rash will worsen over days or weeks without treatment with steroids, the rash may not go away for up to three weeks without treatment, many children will have worsening symptoms with each exposure, and that some areas of a child’s skin that had less exposure to the poison ivy plant will get the rash later than others.
